Ah $Shit,here we go again!

One tired line from a guy standing on the wrong corner in 2004. Twenty-odd years later it's how the entire internet says of course this is happening again. Now it's a coin.

The lore

Six words, twenty years

Every meme has an origin story. This one has a release date, a specific street corner, and a man who was already having a bad day.

The opening moments of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas — CJ walking down an alley as the subtitle appears.
Los Santos  /  October 2004  /  the moment it was said

October 24th, 2004. Rockstar puts Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas on the PlayStation 2. The story opens with Carl "CJ" Johnson coming home to Los Santos after five years away. Before he gets ten minutes of peace, corrupt cops pick him up, shake him down, and dump him on a corner deep in rival territory with nothing but a bike and a very long walk.

He looks around at a neighbourhood that has clearly not missed him. And instead of panicking, instead of a speech, he just sighs it out like a man who has done this a hundred times before:

"Ah shit, here we go again."Carl Johnson, first playable minute

That's the whole thing. No drama, no surprise — just the flat recognition that the wheel has turned back around to the same place. Millions of people heard it in 2004 and thought nothing of it. It sat inside the game for a decade, waiting.

Then the internet found it. In January 2015 someone clipped the scene onto YouTube on its own, cut loose from the game. That September, a poster on the GTA forums used the screenshot as a reply to yet another repeat of the same tired thread — the first time on record that it was used as a reaction rather than a memory.

From there it did what good memes do: it got captioned. Polish forums in late 2017, MemeCenter that December, then Reddit through 2018 — history memes, Tekken threads, anywhere a cycle was repeating itself. Slow, steady, unglamorous spread.

April 2019 is when the dam broke. A green-screen edit of the scene hit Twitter, and suddenly anyone could drop anything at all behind CJ's shoulder. Thousands of retweets in days, then a flood of versions. Wars, elections, sequels, deadlines, group chats, an ex texting "hey" — same shoulder, same subtitle, same resignation.

Two decades on it's one of the most durable reaction images ever made, with over a million views on its Know Your Meme entry and no sign of retiring. Because the joke was never really about a video game. It's about the fact that everything comes back around — and when it does, nobody screams. They sigh.

And now you're on a coin website reading about it. Ah shit, here we go again.

How it escaped the game

The long way round

Oct 2004

San Andreas ships on PS2. The line is delivered in the first playable minute and immediately forgotten by everyone except the people who never forgot it.

Jan 2015

The scene is uploaded to YouTube on its own for the first time. Ten years in the vault, now a standalone clip.

Sep 2015

A GTA forums user posts the screenshot as a reaction to a thread that keeps coming back. First documented use as a reaction image.

2017

The first captioned edits appear — a Polish imageboard in November, MemeCenter in December. People start writing over the subtitle.

2018

Reddit takes it. History memes, meme economy, fighting game subs, Instagram. Steady spread, still niche.

Apr 2019

A green-screen version drops on Twitter and racks up thousands of retweets in a week. Now anything can go behind him. It goes everywhere.

Today

Over a million views on the Know Your Meme entry, hundreds of image and video variants, and a permanent seat in the internet's vocabulary.
